About the Program
The ICS Music Program aims to provide opportunities for all students to learn, create, and experience all aspects of music. We currently offer 5 musical ensembles that meet before, during, and after school. These ensembles are the Concert Band, Jazz Band, High School Orchestra, Middle School Orchestra, and Choir.
The ICS Music Ensembles perform multiple concerts each year and play at the ICS graduation. The ensembles also participate in the LWSD and Northlake Region music festivals. In addition, students in an ensemble can also participate in All-State and solo/ensemble competitions, as well as LWSD honor ensembles.
To register for one of our ensembles, please follow the link to our online registration forms below:
Our Concert Band serves students in grades 6 through 12. All students in Concert Band must have had at least one year of experience playing either a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument in order to join.
Concert Band meets after school four days a week. Our weekly schedule is tentatively as follows:
Monday: 3:30 to 4:30 PM (Brass only)
Tuesday: 2:30 to 3:30 PM (Full Band rehearsal)
Thursday: 3:30 to 4:30 PM (Woodwinds and Percussion only)
Friday: 2:30 to 3:30 PM (Full Band rehearsal)
Our Middle School Orchestra serves students in grades 6 through 8. All students in Middle School Orchestra must have had at least one year of experience playing a standard string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass).
Middle School Orchestra meets after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM (time is tentative--there may be changes for 2019-20 school year).
Our High School Orchestra serves students in grades 9 through 12. All students in High School Orchestra must have had at least one year of experience playing a standard string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass) in order to join.
High School Orchestra meets during the school day. Registration for High School Orchestra is done separately along with the registration for all other classes during the school day.
Our Jazz Band serves students in grades 6 through 12. All students in Jazz Band must have had at least one year of experience playing either piano, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum set, or a woodwind or brass instrument in order to join. Students interested in joining Jazz Band must pass an audition held at the beginning of the year. If you play a wind instrument, you must also be in Concert Band in order to join Jazz.
We will have an informational meeting at the beginning of the year about Jazz Band and the audition process for those students who are interested (date and time TBD). Auditions are typically held at the end of September, and Jazz Band begins at the beginning of October.
Jazz Band meets during 0 period before school on Tuesdays and Fridays tentatively from 6:35 to 7:25 AM.

- My student plays piano. What ensemble can they join?
- Can I join more than one music ensemble and receive academic credit for it?
- Does ICS provide students with instruments?
- Where can students store their instruments during the day?
- Where do the music ensembles rehearse?
- Is there a fee to join?
- My student is not in an ensemble at ICS. Can they still participate in the Lake Washington School District/Northlake Region Solo & Ensemble Festivals and WMEA All-State?
- Can a student earn academic credit in a music ensemble at ICS?
Unfortunately, our ensembles include a wide age range of students. Many of our ensembles have intermediate to advanced players. Therefore, our repertoire and curriculum is not aimed at beginner level players. For this reason, we do not accept beginners in any of our instrumental ensembles. If your student would like to learn how to play an instrument, they can take private lessons outside of school and complete an audition for me after 6 months to see if they would be able to join us at the level of our ensembles.
We have many piano players at ICS and unfortunately, we do not accept pianists into our Concert Band or Orchestras. However, we do accept pianists into our Jazz Band that meets before school. Pianists must complete an audition at the beginning of the year to be able to join. For more information regarding this ensemble, please click on the Jazz Band tab above.
Currently we cannot offer an instrument for every student to play on. We do have a limited number of larger sized instruments (double bass, cello, tuba, etc.) for use within school. Attaining a minimum set of instruments for all students to be able to use is something that we are working towards and will come with time as our program grows!
Students can keep their instruments on the Lyceum stage during the day, which is monitored by Ms. O’Keefe. We do not have lockers for instruments currently because we share the Lyceum stage with other events and have limited space. Some instruments may be locked inside Ms. O’Keefe’s office/storage room as well.
